Tintagel Castle

With its spectacular location on one of England's most coastlines, Tintagel Castle is a place of legends. For over 800 years, a tale has been told that Tintagel was the birthplace of the noble and good King Arthur, born to the beautiful Queen Igerna and protected from evil by the magician, Merlin, who lived in a cave below the mighty fortress. Joined on the mainland by a narrow neck of land, Tintagel island faces the Atlantic. On the mainland, the remains of the medieval castle, thought to date from the 13th century, represent only one phase in a long history of occupation. After a period as a Roman settlement and military outpost, Tintagel is thought to have been the stronghold of a Celtic king during the 5th and 6th centuries. As many mysteries remain about Tintagel as facts are know; today, fact and fiction are inextricably entwined and Tintagel remains one of the most awe-inspiring and romantic spots in Britain.
